Advocacy & Inspiration at the 2025 Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Representing Wisconsin at the 2025 Credit Union Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) opening ceremony were Christine Moczynski (right), President & CEO of Prime Financial Credit Union and Wisconsin Credit Union League (WCUL) Board Chair, alongside WCUL President & CEO, Sarah Wainscott (left). Both leaders sported attire honoring the legacy of the late Bob Uecker. Uecker, renowned radio broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers for 54 seasons, was known for his unrivaled passion for baseball. His fervor for the game serves as a reminder how dedication and teamwork can leave a lasting positive impact on the world.

The GAC brings together dedicated credit union professionals from across the country to do just that, make a positive difference in the world through dedication and teamwork. This year's theme is "Together We Move – Moving with purpose. Moving with passion. Moving with strength." Leaders at the GAC are advocating for thoughtful legislation that supports the important work credit unions.

Hike the Hill

Hike the Hill is a unique opportunity for credit union leaders to meet directly with legislators and their staff. During these meetings, credit union leaders share stories with lawmakers about how credit unions serve their members and communities. These conversations emphasize the credit union difference: a not-for-profit model that prioritizes people over profits.

The not-for-profit status of credit unions fundamentally sets them apart from traditional banks. Unlike banks, which are driven to generate profits for shareholders, credit unions are cooperatives that exist solely to serve their members, and any profits credit unions generate are returned to their members in the form of lower fees, better rates on loans and deposit accounts, and enhanced services and technology.

This distinction not only shapes how credit unions operate but also how they engage with their communities. Credit unions are often formed to meet the needs of specific groups or communities, giving them a deep understanding of their members' needs. They support local initiatives, provide financial education, and offer personalized service that large banks generally cannot match.

Collaboration Fostering Innovation

The Governmental Affairs Conference is a gathering of professionals united by a shared mission to serve others. While credit unions may compete in the marketplace, events like the GAC highlight the spirit of collaboration that defines the movement. Conversations among credit union leaders often center around sharing ideas, driving innovation, and finding new ways to better serve members.

The willingness of credit unions to work across competitive lines is unique. Credit unions understand that when one succeeds, the entire movement grows stronger, and we all succeed. Whether it’s sharing best practices, collaborating on new technologies, or brainstorming solutions to common challenges, networking at the GAC fosters a culture of cooperation that benefits credit union members nationwide. This spirit of collaboration ensures that credit unions, regardless of size or location, can continue to provide exceptional service and support to their members.

World-Class Inspiration

This year's keynote lineup features speakers from a variety of industries, including communication, financial services, sports leadership, teamwork, and hospitality. These keynotes inspire and challenge attendees, offering fresh perspectives and reminding them that credit unions are not just financial institutions—they are catalysts for positive change.

A Home Run for Credit Unions

The GAC is a celebration of the strength and resilience of the credit union movement. It serves as a reminder that credit unions are about more than just numbers—they're about the people, the stories, and the impact they make together, a type of teamwork that would make Uecker proud.
